I lean on to, or hold on to, my furniture when walking between rooms

Remove lightweight objects or furniture

If you are finding that you have to use furniture for support when moving about your home, you should consider having an assessment by a physiotherapist. They should be able to offer advice and any necessary equipment for safe mobility.

Avoid using even sturdy items of furniture to hold onto. If you lean on furniture, it could break or move which could cause you to fall and injure yourself. In addition, in leaning to reach furniture, you could misjudge the distance or lose your handhold, both of which could also result in injury. Remove lightweight furniture and unstable items which you might reach out for when moving around. This will free up space for you to use a walking aid if necessary.

You could discuss the possibility of a referral to a physiotherapist with your G.P. To find a G.P. visit www.nhs.uk or phone 020 8335 1330. If you wish to request a private appointment with a physiotherapist then you can obtain a list of local chartered physiotherapists who offer private services from the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists at www.csp.org.uk or tel: 020 7306 6666
